The Museu de Menorca's previously unseen artefacts

The current Museu de Menorca's collection is made up of about 200,000 artefacts of very different natures: archaeology, ethnology, art, numismatics, malacology...

If we want to understand the history of this collection from the beginning, we must travel back in time to 1889, when the Museo Municipal de Mahón was inaugurated. With the collection from that Museum, another was born in 1944, the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes de Mahón, which was the predecessor of the current Museu de Menorca, inaugurated in 1998.  During all these years of history, the collection has grown thank you to donations, acquisitions and deposits.

In this exhibition, we are putting on display a small selection of the most curious artefacts, either because of the lack of information about them due to their geographical de-contextualisation, or because of their eccentricity. This makes them difficult to exhibit as part of a more formal exhibition but not because of that are they any less interesting or worthy of being viewed.

This exhibition reminds us of the old "curious artefact's rooms" or "cabinet of curiosities" that existed in the previous museums, where strange and diverse objects were displayed in no specific order.

From Tuesday to Saturday: 10am - 2pm / 6pm - 8pm

Sunday: 10am -2pm

Closed on Monday.
